From The Artist: Cornelius Varley was an English watercolor painter and optical instrument maker best known for his detailed watercolors of landscapes. Varley invented the graphic telescope, an optical device for artists that could project the image being painted onto drawing surface. While traveling through North Wales, Varley often went out in bad weather and sat for hours on end to observe the effects of light, wind and rain on atmosphere.
